UPDATE: FirstNet Implications For Building Owners

As the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) gears up to award a contract to one lucky bidder to build the first-ever nationwide public safety broadband network, many are curious about the FirstNet implications for building owners and how this project may ultimately affect them. The FirstNet initiative, which is led by the federal government, does not spell out any direct requirements for building owners, and typically building regulations are established by local jurisdictions.

FirstNet Announces Eight Grant Awards For Public Safety Entities

The First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) announced on August 18th the funding of eight awards for its Band 14 Incumbent Spectrum Relocation Grant Program (Band 14 Program). This program provides financial assistance to eligible public safety entities for relocating their existing radios and systems from Band 14 in advance of the deployment and operation of the Nationwide Public Safety Broadband Network (NPSBN).

In-Building Public Safety Vertical Location Technologies May Solve Large Building Communication Problems

Large buildings pose special challenges for public safety communications for two main reasons: Cell signals can have a tough time penetrating walls, and traditional navigation technologies do not provide vertical location information, a.k.a. z-axis data. Several government bodies, including the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet), the Institute for Telecommunication Sciences (ITS) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), are in a hurry to fix those problems.

Kansas City Dispatchers Frustrated By Inability To Trace Cell Phones

  70% of emergency calls now come from cell phones. But dispatchers in Kansas City are unable to trace all of the calls that come from cell phones. Sometimes they will receive different locations a half a mile a way from each other. Can you imagine if the call was incorrectly traced to another building five blocks away during rush hour traffic? For first responders, the extra time it takes to locate the source of the call could be the difference between life and death.

SBC Code Meeting Chicago 2015 Recap

At the table were representatives for AHJ’s, equipment manufacturers, systems integrators, carriers, REIT’s and building developers.
